January 4, 2005 Dear Fellow Members, Happy New Year! Our meeting on Monday, January 10, 2005 will begin at 7 p.m. at the Carrollton Public Library at Josey Ranch Lake, 1700 Keller Springs Road, Carrollton, TX 75006 in the Environmental Classroom at the back near the Peggy Perry Oliver Genealogy & Local History room. Our speaker this month is Steven Butler who has spoken to us previously on Captain Preston Witt. His topic this month is the history of White Rock Lake. Although it came into being in 1911 as a response to Dallas' need for a reliable source of drinking water, it ended up forming the centerpiece of a large urban park. He has written a book titled From Water Supply to "Urban Oasis": A History of White Rock Lake Park and also published a two part article on the subject in "Legacies, A History Journal for Dallas and North Central Texas. We hope that your articles for this years Elm Fork Echoes are almost complete. The submission deadline is the end of January. Ann Perdue & Jan Jones will begin editing the articles and preparing the photographs for this years issue next month. The Carrollton library has processed a large number of memorial gifts from the society since our last meeting. The society will continue to honor our past members and officers. PCHS members are encouraged to volunteer to serve as an officer for the 2005-2006 year. Please contact an executive board member if you are willing to serve. In February, we will have a Valentines Day party in the large meeting room at the library. If you have old Valentines that you would be willing to share with the group, please bring them for our display. Wed also love to hear any stories you have about a Valentines Day event or party that was special to you. With great expectations for 2005,
Richard Monroe President, Peters Colony Historical Society |
