October 4, 2005 Dear Fellow Members, Our meeting on Monday, October 10, 2005 will begin at 7:00 p.m. at the Carrollton Public Library at Josey Ranch Lake, 1700 Keller Springs Road, Carrollton, TX 75006 in the Environmental Classroom at the back near the Peggy Perry Oliver Genealogy & Local History room. This month in recognition of the State Fair of Texas, Steven Butler will present a program on the history of Fair Park. According to his website: Fair Park was "born" in 1886 when eighty acres of "hog-wallow prairie" on the outskirts of East Dallas were chosen as the site of the "Dallas State Fair," the "grand-daddy" of today's State Fair of Texas. The program & slide show Steven presented last year on White Rock Lake was very interesting and we look forward to another great program this year. You might enjoy reading about Fair Park and exploring the photographs on Stevens website, http://www.watermelon-kid.com/places/FairPark/Fairpark.htm. He has written a book titled From Hog Wallow to Historic Landmark: A History of Dallas' Fair Park due out in December 2005. The September meeting with Mr. Sam Houston was one of the most interesting I have attended in years. I am looking forward to Mrs. Houstons presentation for our November 14th meeting. The November meeting will be in the same place and will start at the same time as the October meeting. I recommend that we dedicate the 2006 Elm Fork Echoes to articles about surviving hard times from the beginning of Peters Colony through the end of World War II. Maybe we could name it Memories of Strong People in Tough Times. Jan and I look forward to seeing you. Richard Monroe President, Peters Colony Historical Society |
